Level Error Type Description Example
Morphological 1. Correct word, incorrect form (ClInF) Right word but in the wrong grammatical form. Using "ran" when "run" was the correct tense.
Lexical 2. Incorrect style synonym (Styl) Word means the same but is inappropriate for the context. Using "commence" where "start" would be more appropriate.
3. Incorrect word (InW) A completely wrong word is used. "Apple" instead of "orange".
4. Extra word (ExW) An unnecessary word is added. "She is is going home."
5. Missing word (MissW) A word from the original is omitted in the translation. Original: "She is going home." Translation: "She going home."
6. Idiomatic expression (Idiom) Fails to translate idiomatic expressions correctly. "Kick the bucket" translated as a physical action.
Syntactic 7. Wrong Punctuation (InP) Incorrect use of punctuation marks. "What is your name," instead of "What is your name?"
8. Missing Punctuation (MissP) Omission of necessary punctuation marks. "She said hello" instead of "She said, hello."
9. Word Order at Word level (WoW) Jumbled or incorrect order of words within a clause or phrase. "She home is going" instead of "She is going home."
10. Word Order at Phrase level (WoPh) Larger chunks or phrases are rearranged in a disruptive manner. "Even though she was tired, she finished her work" rearranged inappropriately.
